Thomas Paine Towards An Independent Nation - 1718 Words
Thomas Paine: Towards an Independent Nation Thomas Paine is most known for his influence in the freedom loving American colonies. With his excellent use of rhetoric and his charisma, he quickly began to gain followers. In his writings, such as Common Sense, The Rights of Man, and The Age of Reason, he used these skills to call the Americans to action. Thomas Paine influenced American society and literature with his argumentative pamphlets and influential writings which inspired Americans to take action against Britain. Thomas Paine s most argumentative pamphlet, Common Sense, was one of the major ways he got his word across to others. The pamphlet was published on January 10,1776 and is regarded as Paine s most influential piece of work. This persuasive piece was mainly directed towards the American colonists. It presented all of the political, economic, and military reasoning behind the need for detachment from Britain. Paine s message spread very quickly with over 120,000 copies be ing sold in just three months. Tensions with were already high during this time due to events such as the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Stamp Act, Sugar Act, Townshend Acts, and Coercive Acts. Common Sense listed the current problems and the colonists need for a resolution was further ignited. These problems were used as a gateway, and basis, for the escalation of the ongoing rebellion to a full scale revolution. Paine displayed these problems through a format of 46 pagesShow MoreRelatedThe Ideas Of The Enlightenment, By Thomas Paine And The Declaration Of Independence767 Words à |à 4 Pagesas defined in Thomas Paineââ¬â¢s Common Sense, can be broadly defined is the movement towards reason and individualism rather than tradition. Hamlet and Macbeth Compared as Aristotelian Tragedies Essay
Aristotleââ¬â¢s Poetics is often considered the blueprint to a successful tragedy; his outline has been used for hundreds of years. Aristotle defines a tragedy as ââ¬Å"an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitudeâ⬠¦ in the form of an action, not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotionsâ⬠(House 82). Aristotle believed that the most important part of a strong tragedy was the plot, and from that, the other elements such as character, diction, etc. would emerge. Aristotle states, ââ¬Å"the principle of tragedy ââ¬â the soul, if you like ââ¬â is the plot, and second to that the charactersâ⬠(Whalley 27). Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Macbeth and Hamlet essentially mirror this definition. While it is trueâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Hamlet tackles the tragedy within a family, but Macbeth is written as a tragedy that occurs between friends and associates. While extremely ambitious to be king , at the opening of the play Macbeth is a loyal servant to King Duncan of Scotland. However, upon hearing a prophecy from the three witches that predicts his rise to the throne, an insatiable sense of ambition to succeed and wield power overwhelms the good nature of Macbeth. Aristotle describes this part of tragedy as, ââ¬Å"the action is human, the energy is humanâ⬠¦ the action is plotted and prepared by the makerâ⬠(Whalley, 23). This is evident when Macbeth utters to himself, ââ¬Å"Let not light see my black and deep desiresâ⬠making known his intentions to murder the king (Macbeth I.iii.52-53). His action is a premeditated response and is aggravated by his all too human emotions, ambitions and greed. After the action element of the story, the character is the next central component in a successful Aristotelian tragedy. According to Aristotle, the character must be true to life and natural; a character is supposed to be a perfectly related to the audience while remaining believable enough to hold their role in a production (House, 91). Hamlet is a wealthy and privileged prince; however, he deals with the problems similar to most common people. Demand and Supply Free Essays
Medical advances can range from witching over to Electronic Record keeping, to the use of Tell-health. The need for this is as diverse as the products and services themselves. One of the options that are currently available is home care. We will write a custom essay sample on Demand and Supply or any similar topic only for you Order Now As the baby boomer population ages, the elderly population will increase the demand for home health services due to financial and emotional factors. The continuum or availability of home care programs will be greatly needed in the present years to come. Supply Demand Factors Many factors contribute to the demand and supply of healthcare products and services. The concept of demand versus supply In home health care can never be testified. No one health care facility can meet all the demands of medical services. As individuals are living longer and hospital admittance costs seems to increase while providing quality care seems to decrease, consumers are seeking to manage chronic illnesses within the comfort of their own home. As the population ages we are seeing many Individuals coming down with diseases that are either not curable or that has ran Itsââ¬â¢ course In the body and there Is nothing that can be done to prolong life. Hospice care Is palliative care given to Individuals who are terminally Ill, with an expected survival of six months or less. This is when this type of service is needed and many of individuals, especially the minorities do not know that these services exist either because they contribute this to high cost service or think that it is not covered by their insurance. Another factor contributing to an increase in demand for home healthcare services are advances in medical technology which make it possible to manage conditions in a home setting that would previously have required hospitalizing or the services of a skilled nursing facility. Consumers have easy access to home care services, they have a choice among providers, and consumers are currently selecting he best service based upon a variety of options. The range of those Interested In from moderate to severe. The many options available range from skilled nursing, Occupational [physical therapy, rehabilitative [social services and personal ODL assistance can be provided at within the confines on oneââ¬â¢s home. Home health care helps prevent the need for higher-cost care. Home health care helps prevent the need for higher-cost care. Hospitals can reduce the cost and save on providing medical treatment and equipment items such as; medical professionalsââ¬â¢ time, disposable syringes, catheters, and dressing changes and other supplies to treat the attain. ââ¬Å"The problem in healthcare is that the consumer often pays little or nothing for services, despite the current reality of deductibles and co-payments. When this is the case, price stops being a factor in demand and demand increases to virtually unlimited levelsâ⬠(Salesman, 2009, p. L). Economic Cost Nationally, the median hourly cost for homemaker services and home health aide services is $18 and $19, skilled nursing $40, TO APT $65-$75; administrators, $32, directors $38. Nationally the median annual cost for care in an assisted living facility by comparison, is $39,600. Nationally, Private nursing homes medium annual sectional cost, over the past five years, rose 4. 3 percent annually to $81 ,030. While the average home-care visit costs Medicare $150 per visit. The average hospital stay costs Medicare $1500. Medicare expenditures in 2008 totaled $324 billion, slightly more than 2. 2% of gross domestic product (GAP). Medicare home health covers about 3. 3 million beneficiaries resulting in $16. 5 billion in total Medicare payments in 2008 (SMS, Data Compendium, 2009). Access and Supply Consumers have easy access to home care services, they have a choice among providers, and consumers are currently selecting the best service based upon a rarity of options. The range of those interested in home care is vast. Depending upon the situation, the need for services can range from moderate to severe. The many services that are available range from skilled nursing, Occupational [physical therapy, rehabilitative [social services and personal ODL assistance. Other services consist of transportation, medical equipment such as diagnostic and incontinence supplies, diapers, gloves, bed covers, commodes, wheel chairs, lifts, meal programs, etc. , can be provided all within the confines on oneââ¬â¢s home. Home health care helps prevent the need for higher-cost care. Most insuranceââ¬â¢s, such as Medicare and Medicaid, cover the costs of many home care services. Consumers can seek out services through the referral of a Physicians approval. Once approved, consumers can begin to enjoy the many services available to help themselves regain independence of their physical abilities. Services will last until consumer is able to remain in a residence with assistance of primary caregiver/support from community agencies. Conclusion The United States aging population will require a lot more out of health care services than ever before, this is mainly due to the longer life span of the elderly with heroic illnesses. According to the U. S. Administration on Aging, by 2030 the number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double to 71 million, thatââ¬â¢s roughly 20 percent of the U. S. Population. In some states, as much as a quarter of the population will be aged 65 and older. Being that health care is on the verge of change, the certainty that these services will still exist in the near future remains order to fulfill the demand of elderly services the supply of home care organizations needs to expand to accommodate physical emotional and financial factors of these nonusers. Environment Due to Mining Industries
Question: Discuss about the Environment Due to Mining Industries. Answer: Impacts on Environment Due to Mining Industries Industrialization has the major part to contribute to the economic development of a nation and its prosperity. However, it is also a major cause of environmental degradation. There are various types of industries running in a nation which includes manufacturing, packaging, refining, dye industry, industrial dump sites, nuclear industry, and mining industry which includes mining operation related to different types of metals and materials such as gold, coal, and precious metals etc. Their environmental threat includes natural resources depletion, major climate changes resulting in global warming, acid rain, and degradation of land, hazardous wastes production, pollution of air, soil, and water. There are different mining industries for the extraction of Copper, diamond, gold, coal, and iron, which produces harmful pollutants in the air, soil, and water(Bendez-Quispe, Azaedo, and Hernndez-Vsquez, 2017). Water and soil contamination secondary to acid mine drainage (AMD) are a major conc ern for environmental safety worldwide. AMD is an underground mining waste of coal, which can cause problems related to land-use and it can stay for ten decades after termination of the mining industry and impacts nearby environments very badly. Due to the absence of disposal of waste water of mine, the ecology is being destroyed with increasing number of days. This coal mine frequently produces metalloids, metals, and acidic substances which affect the soil fertility, moisture, microbiological content, and health. They further lower the pH of water that results in mobilization and dissolution of metals from the coal deposits and thereby damaging the life of aquatic and the nearby vegetation. The disposal water of mine is utilized for irrigation on an occasional basis, which decreases the soil fertility due to the presence of coal slurry in the water. The problem of blasting in the area of the mining industry is affecting the houses present in the surrounding area secondary to shake and disturbance caused by it. The heavy metals emitted by various mining operations such as extraction, mining and strip mining are Hg (Mercury), Zn (Zinc), Cd (Cadmium), Pb (Lead), Cr (Chromium), and Ni (Nickel) (Huisman, Schouten, and Schultz, 2006). The tailings called as solid slurry causes contamination of soil and underground water due to leaching process. Refining of ores also uses caustic chemicals such as dangerous chemical cyanide, which can cause critical environmental and health damages. The mining operation also releases asbestos during the break of the material. The burning of coal releases toxic gases that include nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and dust particles in the air results in acid rain and air pollution. By emitting the heavy metals such as manganese (Mn2+), zinc (Zn2+) and aluminium (Al3+) from coal mines, it is impacting the climate like monsoon season variation, precipitation, and another related condition associated with meteorology an d its outcomes is bad quality crops, flood, and undesirable climate changes(Dev, 2013). Mechanism of Entry of Pollution in the Environment The mining not only impacts the mine workers, but also the surrounding environment. The contaminants emitted from the industries include Hg, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni and others which destroy the helpful microorganisms present in the soil. The mining of nuclear materials leads to the dissolution of strong acid fluids in the rock beds, thereby posing risk to nearby ground water resources. It also causes noise pollution, and other health problems like a headache, sleeplessness, mental disturbance, and irritation. Brine mining causes damage to the storage tanks and pipelines, causing leaks and pollution of water bodies which further results in the plant growth inhibitions and death of aquatic animals (Hasan, Rashid, and Paul, 2015). Industrial pollutants contain toxins which result in the malfunctioning of natural purification (biological) resulting in water and soil borne diseases. Nuclear pollutants cause undesirable diseases secondary to its presence in food items taken by living beings. Lead is the reason of adult cardiovascular disease and results in the impaired neurological development. Chromium causes cancers and mercury damages the neurological function and the kidneys. Cadmium also is a cause of cancer and disease of kidneys. Asbestos results in cancers of lung and lung related illness. The chromium (Cr6) metal after absorption reduces itself to Crp3 which binds to skin proteins strongly and thereby causes various diseases like cancer of the lung, ulcers, damage to the brain, tissue-specific necrosis, emphysema, carcinoma, organoleptic problems, and pneumoconiosis (Cha and Stow, 2015). Iron is an essential element of diet, but lethal quantities of it secondary to mine effluents can cause cognitive impa irments (depression), cardiac and lung problems. Mining-related activities have caused insurmountable environmental threat which includes suffocation, sore throat, eye irritation, cough, pain in the chest, and sneezing. Deforestation is also the reason of leaching of chemicals inside the earth and its resources secondary to the erosion (Mining exposes Sudanese population to harmful pollutants, 2015). Measures to Control the Industrial Pollution There is evidence for the control measures taken by the mining industries to treat its wastes to minimize its environmental impact. Despite the presence of disposal systems for wastes produced by mining operations, there is still the presence of a large number of contaminants in it as the technologies and plant involved are not enough for the treatment of mine wastes. This results in the gradual increase of its concentration which changes with distance as compared to the point of generation. There is alarming need of taking action to mitigate mining effects as if it is not corrected, then the end cost for communities and government will be dreadful. Water usage can be minimized by conducting underground gasification than surface mining, which will help in lowering the amount of hazardous evaporation in the air. Phytoremediation can also be utilized to prevent the harmful effects of mining. This method uses few specific plants to destroy contamination of soil. However, the methods of land-farming (by the use of bulk nutrients and agents), biosparging (by the use of microorganisms) are also good for prevention of mining pollution. Buffering agents like (CO2 and HCO3-) and other chemicals like (lime, fertilizers) can be utilized to acid neutralization of water (AMD) and also of the soil. To control pollution of air and water, the mine water, which is delivered to the sedimentation pond, should be drained using natural drain to use it for suppression of dust. Similarly, the effluent of washery should be re-circulated through the slime and thickener ponds. To reduce air pollution, sprinkling and spraying of water are done to the roads of transport to decrease the generation of dust. The depressed surface created after mining should be rehabilitated by sealing the cracks and tree plantation which would help to reduce pollution to some extent(Pochechun, Arkhipov and Kuchin, 2017). The mining pollution can be prevented by improving the manufacturing efficiency for reducing the new minerals demand and by focusing on the use renewable energy resources. By reducing consumption of minerals as currently 80 tons of resources are needed yearly per person and comprises mining resources also (Petrov and Tanev, 2015). The pollution in the mining can be controlled by doing a proper assessment of environmental impact and future mitigation measure and it is followed by proper planning its post and pre-mining operations. The industry should have the legal grant to start its operation. The regulatory standard defined by government must be taken into consideration. Regular monitoring should be done to check its released substances and emissions in the surrounding. Remining should be done which includes mining in the previously mined region to manage environmental problems. Mining industry should sign a legal agreement to remedy any environmental damage caused by their activiti es. The objective of mission 2017s plan should be to increase greener mining, refining methods, recycling efforts, decrease the cost of damage to the environment, and increase the involvement of authority to regulate dirty mining operations(Mortensen, 2012). What Your Writing Style Says About You
So many of our interactions ââ¬â both at work and in our personal lives ââ¬â are done digitally. Whether itââ¬â¢s via email, social media or SMS, having strong written communication skills are not only important for getting things done, but also for building and maintaining relationships with customers, vendors, and colleagues. Your words reflect who you are Your choice of words in an email or social media post may feel spontaneous, but they can actually tell a surprising amount about who you are. Text-analysis studies have found a strong link between certain key words and major personality traits. One study in particular analyzed the Facebook posts of 75,000 participants who also took personality tests. The results showed clear trends in word choice based on personality type ââ¬â extroverts used a higher number of ââ¬Å"social wordsâ⬠, such as ââ¬Å"funâ⬠and ââ¬Å"party,â⬠while introverts utilized words that referred to solitary activities, including ââ¬Å"computerâ⬠and ââ¬Å"reading.â⬠Narcissists, predictably, talked about themselves a lot, leaning heavily on words like ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠, ââ¬Å"myselfâ⬠and ââ¬Å"me.â⬠What your emails say about you Emails are a vital form of business communication and seemingly small details make a huge difference: never letting a typo slip through will make you more likely to be seen as conscientious and detail-oriented. Lengthy emails can signify thoroughness, but they may also imply neediness or disorganized thoughts, so itââ¬â¢s important to keep in mind who you are writing for and what your goals are. Even your email response time can send a message ââ¬â responding instantly might mean youââ¬â¢re hard-working (or that you maybe didnââ¬â¢t think through your message carefully), but a late response can imply a lack of interest. Perhaps unsurprisingly, your communication habits are also likely shaped by your age. A survey of 1,200 people ranging in age from 18 to 64 revealed certain trends in email habits that correlated with age. People between the ages of 55 and 64 were less likely to draft lengthy, verbose emails than the 18-to-24 set while older adults were also less tolerant of spelling and grammar mistakes. Age even seems to play a part in determining why people choose to rewrite emails before sending them ââ¬â the majority of participants between ages 45 and 54 rewrote emails to sound more authentic, while 18-to-24 year olds did so to sound more intelligent. A minefield of miscommunication Texts, emails and posts are easy to misinterpret without the help of gestures, vocal inflections and other clues that come from in-person communication. In one interesting study, participants received 10 statements via email ââ¬â some of these statements were sarcastic, while others were serious. The recipients were able to identify them correctly only about half the time. However, when they heard the same messages in a voice recording, they were able to correctly interpret the sentiment 73 percent of the time. So, read your message aloud before you send or post it ââ¬â if thereââ¬â¢s a chance it could be misunderstood, play it safe and tweak it. Communicate effectively Itââ¬â¢s clear that your writing style reflects on your ability to communicate as well as how others perceive you. Sometimes, itââ¬â¢s worth taking a little bit of extra time to craft a message that will spark the response you want from the reader. Know when to keep your communication short, when to be casual or formal, and when itââ¬â¢s appropriate to be humorous or sarcastic.

Freedom and Liberty Essays
Freedom and Liberty Essays Freedom and Liberty Essay Freedom and Liberty Essay Essay Topic: On Liberty Name: Instructor: Course: Date: : Freedom and Liberty The two concepts of Freedom and liberty have occupied the minds of Americans for a very long time. America is always touted as the land of freedom. The declaration of independence illustrated the kinds of freedom all Americans ought to enjoy. It defined freedom in a simple and concise way. The desire for freedom was strong, and Americans desired to be free from the British colonialists. This freedom was expressed in the American Declaration of independence. Some aspects of freedom were however overlooked; Elizabeth Cady Stanton in her Declaration of Sentiments created awareness on these neglected freedoms. Universal freedom in American society was still a farfetched dream. Peopleââ¬â¢s desire to be free is affected by many factors. Society and government dictate the kinds of freedom people enjoy. The rights and freedoms that people enjoy, depend on how the government approaches these fundamental issues. Freedom is the ability of individuals to gain control over their lives and their actions. It consists of the power of individuals to choose that which they deem best without any form of restraint. Free individuals are not restricted from expressing their rights and freedoms. Free individuals usually have the opportunity to exercise their rights, thoughts, authorities and aspirations. Freedom allows the individual to pursue their interests without any restrictions whatsoever. A free society is a society where individuals can freely exercise their rights and freedoms. In addition, such societies do not have restrictions on the rights of individuals. In a free society, all the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals are upheld. Such a society upholds and promotes the independence of individuals in their actions, speech and the way of thinking. Different forms of government affect the freedom of individuals in many different ways. Democracies and republics affect the ways through which individuals express their freedoms and rights in diverse ways. Governments invade many aspects of human life and institute laws that govern the way people live. There are rules governing how people should be taught in schools, the way they should treat the environment, how they used their possessions and rules on what individuals are supposed to own and what they are not supposed to own. The actions of many government agencies impinge on the rights and freedoms of the citizens and society. Freedom consists of being free from any constraints or restrictions. The government however limits our actions and places restraints on the choices we make. One may argue that government restrictive action is meant to protect us, however, some government restrictions that are not protective in any way. The government has violated societal freedoms in several ways. It controls the schooling system and dictates the way schools are run a decision that should be left solely to parents. Republican governments score highly when it comes to restrictions on the rights and freedoms of individuals. In republics, citizen participation is limited; furthermore, republican policy and laws are skewed towards conservative values that are usually against the majority. Freedom is still not enjoyed by everyone. Women especially have encountered many challenges in their pursuit of freedom. Women are still discriminated upon in many respects. They are looked upon as lesser beings compared to men. The United States has made enormous strides in the elimination of women oppression; it however still exists in varied forms as inequality and gender discrimination. In addition to the declaration of independence, Thomas Jefferson also authored the Virginia statute of religious freedom. Jefferson advocated for the freedom of individuals to exercise their religious rights without interference. Jefferson was able to describe freedom and democracy in a universal way. He opposed the tyranny of the colonists and the oppression Americans faced under the rule of the British colonial powers (Jefferson Fink 10). His works on freedom and government triggered a global struggle for freedom. He called for an abolishment of slavery and instituted the struggle for religious freedom. He called for universal rights and the emancipation of slaves. He insisted on the need for equal rights for people of all races. The declaration of Independence defined freedom as political fairness and freedom from political oppression. Elizabeth Caid Stanton, on the other hand, is concerned with the oppression women undergo at the hands of men. She proceeds to write her own declaration on the equality between men and women. This declaration was known as the declaration of sentiments. In her Declaration, she cites the oppression of women in society (Stanton 1). Stanton acknowledges the fact that even after independence had been declared there were sections of the population that were still oppressed and discriminated. Women still struggled against discrimination and inequality. She refined Jeffersonââ¬â¢s declaration of independence and used it to convey her sentiments on the issue of discrimination against women. She advocated for marital freedom and that men should treat their wives as equal partners within the marriage union. In addition, the Declaration of sentiments campaigned for the recognition of women as equal to men not only in marriage but also in intelligence. In my opinion, for people to enjoy their rights and freedoms, there must be respect among them. The government must respect the rights of its citizens and acknowledge that they too possess inalienable rights. Citizens must also respect their fellow citizens. Jefferson and Stanton agree that integrity of parties and respect within unions were the key to the freedom and liberty of persons (Stanton 1). Gathering from the views of these two distinguished historians, freedom is aided by recognition and respect. Jefferson called for the recognition of the American people as people who were worthy of their own independent existence, while Stanton campaigned for the recognition of the woman as an equal being to the man and who deserved to be treated with respect. Carl Becker in his analysis of the Declaration of Independence chooses to tackle the issue of freedom and liberty in American society. Becker examines the Declaration of Independence and then proceeds to equate freedom with government (Becker 47). He says that there exists natural law and that there are inherent natural rights for every human being that must be recognized. He asserts that governments have a role to enforce the natural rights of individuals. Government actions in the enforcement of these rights must be driven by the interests of the majority. Becker reinforces my stance on the need for respect between government and citizens. The existence of respect ensures that other people are treated with the dignity they deserve. Power is a tool through which rights are enforced it is also a tool which authorities can use to trample on the freedoms of the powerless. In the fight for independence, Americans had to use their strength and power against the British to force them into submission. The Declaration of Sentiments relied upon the numbers of men and women in support of gender equality for its success. Power therefore rests with the people; the citizens are the one with the powers to push the government or society into recognizing their inherent rights and freedoms. Today, those who have more power and authority enjoy more freedoms and expression of their rights. The government is the supreme authority through which individuals rights and freedoms are enforced. It passes legislation and laws that may restrict the freedoms of its citizens or promote them. The role of the government in modern society is to protect the rights and freedoms of its citizens. It should ensure that citizens respect each otherâ⠬â¢s rights and that government legislation does not infringe on the rights of citizens. Becker, Carl L. How to Get Into West Point 3 Key Tips
How to Get Into West Point 3 Key Tips SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Located in West Point, NY, West Point is also known as the United States Military Academy. West Point is one of the most prestigious universities in the country and is extremely competitive to get into. It also has an in-depth application process with some unique requirements that you wonââ¬â¢t see at non-military colleges and universities. In this article, weââ¬â¢ll cover exactly how to get into West Point, from the test scores you should aim for to the logistical requirements of your application. How Hard Is It to Get Into West Point? In order to judge how competitive a school is, you need to look at its acceptance rate. West Point has a 10% acceptance rate. That means itââ¬â¢s very selective. When youââ¬â¢re applying to a highly selective school like West Point, you need to make sure your application is as perfect as possible so that you stand out from the crowd. The vast majority of West Point applicants will be highly qualified - you need to be even more so. Your SAT/ACT scores, grades, recommendations, essays and extracurricular activities are all super important parts of your West Point application. You need to have high marks across the board to be a competitive applicant. What Is West Point Looking For in Its Students? You can learn a lot about what a college or university is looking for in its students by looking at its mission. Letââ¬â¢s take a look at West Pointââ¬â¢s mission: The United States Military Academy's mission is to educate, train and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the nation as an officer in the United States Army. West Point has a unique mission among colleges and universities: itââ¬â¢s not only trying to educate students at the highest levels possible, itââ¬â¢s also preparing students to serve in the United States military after graduation. West Point graduates will go on to act as officers in the United States military; theyââ¬â¢re required to serve for five years on active duty. Because West Point graduates will become soldiers, West Point looks for unique qualities among its applicants including: Academic Prowess: West Point trains officers in the US military who will go on to lead people in challenging situations. West Point wants the best and the brightest for its students. Physical Fitness: West Point requires applicants to pass a physical fitness test (more on that later). Students at West Point will have to take rigorous physical fitness classes, so itââ¬â¢s important they have a base level of fitness. Character: Being involved in the military requires a strong character and spirit of service. West Point looks for applicants that have demonstrated a selfless desire to help others. Can You Apply to West Point Early? West Point doesnââ¬â¢t have an early action or early decision deadline. Every applicant has to abide by the February 28 regular admission deadline. West Point Admissions Requirements and Deadlines All West Point applicants must meet the following personal qualifications before applying: Be at least 17 but not older than 22 on July 1 of the year they enter West Point Not be married Not be pregnant Not be legally responsible for support of any children Be in good physical and mental health Pass a medical exam (DODMERB) Above average strength, agility, and endurance A strong performance on the West Point Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) West Point provides a candidate questionnaire if you have any questions about your eligibility based on these requirements. In addition, all applicants must have a Social Security number at the time of their application. West Point also requires that applicants receive a nomination to attend. You can get either a congressional nomination or a service-connected nomination. There are only a few approved sources of congressional nominations: Your representative in Congress Your US senators The Vice President of the United States Delegates to the House of Representatives from Washington, D.C., the Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands The Governor of Puerto Rico The Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico The Secretary of the Army The following applicants have what are known as service-connected nominations, which means that the applicant has a connection to someone in the US military. Sons and Daughters of "career military personnel" (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard) Members of Regular Army and Reserve Components (Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard) Sons and Daughters of Deceased or Disabled Armed Forces Veterans Sons and Daughters of Medal of Honor Recipients Army Junior and Senior ROTC Programs and Honor ROTC Units of Other Services There are specific requirements to being service-connected, so make sure you check them out on West Pointââ¬â¢s website. West Point applicants are also required to submit the following: High school academic transcripts SAT or ACT scores SAT or ACT writing scores 4 letters of recommendation West Point application essay What GPA Do I Need to Get Into West Point? West Point is very competitive to get accepted to. West Point only accepts 10 students out of every 100 applicants, which means that you need to have a stellar application to be considered. One of the most important factors on your application is your GPA. While West Point doesnââ¬â¢t have a minimum GPA requirement, you can look at the average accepted GPA of West Point students to see what you need. The average GPA of admitted West Point applicants is 3.74. Youââ¬â¢ll want to at least meet this GPA to apply. Your application will look even better if itââ¬â¢s higher than the average. That means youââ¬â¢ll need mainly Aââ¬â¢s (you can have a few Bââ¬â¢s peppered in) to achieve this GPA. Since West Point values the academic preparedness of its applicants, you can also demonstrate how serious you are as a student by taking AP, IB, honors, or other advanced classes. If your grades arenââ¬â¢t perfect, you can compensate with high standardized test scores. What Test Scores Do I Need to Get Into West Point? West Point applicants traditionally have competitive standardized test scores. Just as with GPA, youââ¬â¢ll ideally want to meet, if not exceed, the average standardized test scores of West Pointââ¬â¢s admitted applicants. The average SAT composite score for West Point admitted applicants is 1340 (on the 1600 point scale). West Point does something known as ââ¬Å"Highest Sectionâ⬠scoring. That means they consider your highest scores on each section. So, for instance, if you took the SAT in May 2018 and earned a 690 on Reading and a 740 on Math, then took it again in August and earned a 770 on Reading and a 700 on Math, West Point will take the highest score on each section (in this case, 770 and 740). That means itââ¬â¢s in your best interest to take the SAT at least twice before applying to West Point - you canââ¬â¢t hurt your score by going down the second time you take the test. The average ACT score for West Point admitted applicants is 28. West Point doesnââ¬â¢t indicate whether it also takes your highest score on each section for the ACT. Youââ¬â¢re also required to take the writing section on both the SAT and ACT. West Point doesnââ¬â¢t require any SAT subject tests. How to Write Your West Point Application Essays West Point requires that you submit an essay as part of your statement. The essay topic changes yearly and you only get access to the prompt after confirming your eligibility via birthdate and Social Security number, so I canââ¬â¢t offer specific information on the prompt for this year. However, youââ¬â¢ll likely also have to write an essay as part of the nomination process so that your representative, senator, or the Vice President can get to know you. While thereââ¬â¢s no specific formula for what you need to write to get nominated by your congressional representative, successful essays typically do the following: #1: Clearly Demonstrate Interest in West Point and the US military Deciding to go to West Point is a big choice - one that will affect the rest of your life, even beyond graduation. Your essay should indicate why you want to make a commitment to West Point and the military. You need to have clear, compelling reasons. #2: Highlight Your Qualifications for Going to West Point It's extremely competitive to get into West Point. Your representatives will be asked to write multiple letters, so the competition really starts with this letter. You need to show why you deserve their recommendation. Your representative won't have your full West Point application, so you'll need to highlight your academic and extracurricular qualifications to them. #3: Write Clearly and Double-Check for Errors It should go without saying, but your letters should be well-written and error-free. Ask someone to proofread your work and get (at least) a second opinion on the content. so you can be sure you're making a compelling case for why you need a letter of recommendation. 3 Tips for How to Get Into West Point Getting into West Point is difficult, but not impossible. Here are some tips for successfully being accepted at the US Military Academy. #1: Start the Process Early West Point has unique application requirements. Among them, a nomination from an important political representative. You need to build in time to reach out to these representatives and establish a relationship before submitting your application. You also have to pass a physical fitness test. Thatââ¬â¢s not even to say anything about the other application requirements, such as taking the SATs and writing your West Point essay. West Point recommends that students start their applications as early as possible - often, mid-way through their junior year. If you wait too long, you wonââ¬â¢t be able to get all of the application pieces together in time. #2: Know the Application Requirements West Point has unique application requirements. If youââ¬â¢re missing any one of them, your application wonââ¬â¢t even be considered. Make sure you familiarize yourself with these requirements before submitting. Otherwise, youââ¬â¢ll waste your time. #3: Demonstrate Why West Point Is Right For You West Point is not like most other colleges and universities. You need to prove that itââ¬â¢s the right opportunity for you, which means thinking about more than just the stellar education youââ¬â¢ll receive. You need to show that being a part of the military is something important to you, too, and that youââ¬â¢re committed to this career path. Recap: How to Get Into West Point West Point is one of the most competitive schools in the United States to get into. In order to be accepted, you need to have strong academics, high test scores, and stellar recommendations from many people, including your member of Congress or US senator. Start on your West Point application early, put effort into it, and youââ¬â¢ll be on the right track. Whatââ¬â¢s Next? Thinking about college?
